2008 Season – August 1, 2007 thru July
31, 2008
Superbowl 2008 – June
7 & 8, 2008
Superbowl 2008 held at White Sands Bowling Center in Fort Walton Beach, FL had a qualifiers field of 58 bowlers. There were three qualifiers who were unable to attend: Carl Ballard, Patrick Ballard, and Brian Guillen. The 2008 event had a field of 23 in Draft ONE and a field of 23 in Draft TWO with a field of 9 in Draft THREE. White Sands is the site of SSJBA Superbowls for the last eleven seasons. This is the second Superbowl conducted by the SSJBATour. The funds for Superbowl 2008 brought the total Scholarship fund to a new record level near $104,000. Eligibility balances are itemized in a link on the Main page in the last section. This was fourteenth Superbowl, which director Daniel Killion has conducted for SSJBA and SSJBATour. He was assisted by Will Lawrence (former SSJBA bowler), Jim Merry (father of SSJBA member Joe), Robert Leo (father of SSJBA member Nick), Cynthia Rock (mother of SSJBA members David and Brandon) and Angela Derico (mother of SSJBA member Olivia). 2008 event was quite enjoyable and often exciting. We saw a record number (4) of 300 games rolled. First on Saturday, in the fourth match on lanes 5 & 6 the 300 game was rolled by Matt Brannan. Then on Sunday, in the second match on lanes 17 & 18 the 300 game was rolled by Allan Rice II (he rolled an 821 series this season as well) and in the same match moments later on lanes 7 & 8 the 300 game was rolled by Michael Murphy. Then three matches later in the fifth match on lanes 23 & 24 the 300 game was rolled by TJ Senter (he rolled five 300 games this season and one last Superbowl to make an even six for last twelve months) . TJ also reached $4,500 in scholarship eligibility a first in SSJBA history. The ring which SSJBA will be providing to all members rolling a 300 game and/or an 800 series during the last two seasons (in addition to the $100 scholarship) has been designed and as of June 10 ordered. The Special pre season event (Charles Saunders Memorial – see below), which is in the planning at this time will include a presentation of the rings to any awardees attending. Event is currently set as August 9, 2008 at Woodmere Lanes in Montgomery.
Special Awards presented on Saturday June 7 included: Points Champions for all three divisions and Male and Female Sportsmen of the year. Winners of Points Championship received the Eagle award and were: Catherine Prather in Minors; Rachael Long in Classic and Daniel Meeks in Masters. Each winner also received a $150 scholarship. Winners of the Sportsmanship Awards were: Nathan Foshee for the male members and Regina Laglia for the female members. They also received a $150 scholarship. The trophies provided to the Sportsmen are a memorial to former SSJBA member who was a Sportsman himself, Chris Wall. Trophies are provided each year by his parents Herb and Glenda Wall.
Ball award given out for participation in ALL season events went to both Nick Leo and Ross Crider. Thanks to Ebonite International, Inc
Since the FINAL standings will specify, all bowlers in each draft and the Scholarship each was awarded, there will be no separate table specifying the draft they qualified in. However, the leader in each Draft is specified for all matches. This Superbowl 2008 marks the first time that ALL participants were granted eligibility for a scholarship. The total scholarships were $13,400 and included all awards previously mentioned in this summary.

Congratulations to all our Champions and other award winners this season. Looking forward to another great season in 2009.
Next is 2009 Pre Season event with meeting and a one
day tournament at Brunswick Woodmere Lanes in Montgomery, AL on Saturday August
9, 2008. Meeting beginning at 10:00 am
with Tournament following to begin at Noon.
Meeting shall include presentation of all ring awards for the 2007 and
2008 Seasons.
The event has already gathered $600 in scholarship
funds (thanks to those who donated). One
last thing we want to share now so that you can make plans. This year saw another SSJBA alumni pass
away. Corey Sanders died recently
and joined our other alumni Charles Saunders in being a member whom we
want to memorialize in a way they both would have desired - by having a
tournament in their honor. The event
just mentioned in August will be to memorialize Charles
Saunders and the December 13, 2008 SSJBATour stop #8 will be a memorial
event for Corey Sanders. There will be additional Scholarships at both
events. Already some have given for the Charles Saunders Memorial event (August 9) which
will have an estimated fund of at least $1000 to grant. Then the Corey
Sanders Memorial event (December 13) will have an undetermined amount
(already over $1000) which we will follow during the early season as it grows
much as we watch the Superbowl funds grow.
Be certain that you keep both of these dates and be part of honoring the
memories of these two fine young men.
Then in order to promote membership participation in the 2009 season,
the August event will have a fee of only $30 which will include the 2009
season membership in SSJBA for all participants. No added membership fees to be collected at
Seasonal events for anyone participating.
Also remember the Chris
Wall Memorial Scholarship tournament the weekend of Labor Day in Tupelo.
One Last thing, we wish all our members the best of luck
as they participate in the Detroit events (Pepsi, Junior Gold and USBC Youth
Open) and/or the Las Vegas event of Teen Masters. We send forth our best.
